Instagram Suffering From Privacy Policy Woes

Instagram has found itself in a spot of bother over the last few days. Recent changes to it’s privacy policy suggesting that the retro photos network may sell its users photos, has prompted drastic action from individual users and brands alike.

Realising the extent to which this new policy was unfavourable with it’s users, Kevin Systrom Instagram’s CEO, posted to the company’s blog to set the record straight.

“To be clear, it is not our intention to sell your photos” he said.

He also mentions that the company is not intending to use pictures of its members in advertising and the language used in that part of the policy will be removed to avoid confusion.

Systrom did make one concession around advertising:

“Let’s say a business wanted to promote their account to gain more followers and Instagram was able to feature them in some way. In order to help make a more relevant and useful promotion, it would be helpful to see which of the people you follow also follow this business. In this way, some of the data you produce — like the actions you take (eg, following the account) and your profile photo — might show up if you are following this business.”

This push for advertising and revenue generation is the biggest change to the terms of service since Instagram’s acquisition by Facebook for a cool $735million earlier this year.

Facebook itself is criticised to no end for every little alteration they decide to make to their appearance, or their terms of service. It’s users become very vocal during times of change (we all witnessed the apparent outrage to the forceable changing to timeline!), but few ever seem to abandon the network – where would they go?

This is what Instagram need to hope for. The company currently has in the region of 100 million users, whom have uploaded some 5 billion photos. Are these users committed enough to stay put however, or is there scope to move elsewhere? German company EyeEm could provide a more appealing photo host, or perhaps good ol’ Flickr who just released a killer new smartphone app? Only time will tell, let’s just hope Zuckerberg has a plan B if he just squandered $735 million!

TWTW Tech: New nano-SIM Specs Decided

new nano-SIM specs

credit: aspleysatellite.co.uk

The European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) has reached a decision regarding the standard size and insertion mechanism for nano-SIM cards.

The tiny new SIM cards will be 40% smaller than the current micro-SIM, measuring 12.3mm by 8.8mm by 0.67mm. The loading mechanism will be tray based, familiar to those who have used an iPhone or Nokia’s current flagship model – the Lumia 900.

Now that the standard has been agreed, it shall not be long until we see nano-SIMs appearing in smartphones and other mobile devices. The new smaller size will free up precious real-estate inside the phone, allowing for slimmer and smaller devices in the future.

TWTW Tech: Blackberry 10 Sneak Preview

BlackBerry 10RIM, the makers of BlackBerry have had a tough time of late. Everyone and their dog has had a go at putting down the company for falling behind in the smartphone business. Yesterday, those who still believe (or at least those who are just curious) have gathered in Orlando, Florida for BlackBerry World 2012.

Making a brave decision not to showcase any new hardware, RIM have instead turned the attention to their latest operating system – BlackBerry 10. The new OS appears to be developed solely for touch interface, suggesting that finally RIM have caught onto the fact that a physical keyboard is not needed anymore. To assure business types that losing actual keys will not be a problem for efficiency, BlackBerry 10 appears to have a fresh take on predictive text with word suggestions floating above key you just typed.

Get a feel for how typing on BlackBerry 10 will feel from the video below.

TWTW Tech: Spotify for iPad Launches

Spotify for iPad

After what seems like a life time of pleading, begging, wishing, demanding and maybe even some threatening – Spotify have released its iPad app.

The iPad offering has all the features one would expect. You can search and play music from Spotify’s vast library, along with creating playlists which can sync to your device for those dark times you’re offline. The UI has undergone a complete overhaul from it’s iPhone brother. Gorgeous Retina visuals show off a ‘cover flow‘ like home screen, displaying recommendations and new releases. “Now Playing” can be viewed in a stunning full-screen view with HD artwork keeping things looking crisp. Viewing friends playlist and sharing tracks look gorgeous too.

The AirPlay feature found in the iPhone build is there too. If you have a fairly Apple orientated house this feature, paired with Spotify’s gorgeous visuals, make the iPad app the definitive way to experience Spotify in the home.

Check out the video for a peek at the new design.

TWTW Social: LinkedIn launch iPad App

Image representing LinkedIn as depicted in Cru...

Last Wednesday (April 25) saw LinkedIn finally release an iPad application. Building upon the existing iPhone version, the app boasts some neat new features.

Key among these features is the incorporation of your calendar data with information about the people you’re meeting with. The information is gathered from both LinkedIn and Twitter, although Facebook has been omitted. The thinking behind this latest addition is to make using the app part of your regular morning read, preparing you for upcoming meetings by seeing what is happening in the world of those you’re due to meet with. It is a clever idea and one that will make LinkedIn’s users frequent the site much more regularly.

The presentation is also beautiful. Information is clearly and vividly presented, showing not only your calendar, but the most discussed topics/articles and recent job changes by those in your network. These last two features are carried over from the pre-existing iPhone build of the app, although certainly look a lot better with more real estate on the screen.
