Instagram Suffering From Privacy Policy Woes

Instagram has found itself in a spot of bother over the last few days. Recent changes to it’s privacy policy suggesting that the retro photos network may sell its users photos, has prompted drastic action from individual users and brands alike.

Realising the extent to which this new policy was unfavourable with it’s users, Kevin Systrom Instagram’s CEO, posted to the company’s blog to set the record straight.

“To be clear, it is not our intention to sell your photos” he said.

He also mentions that the company is not intending to use pictures of its members in advertising and the language used in that part of the policy will be removed to avoid confusion.

Systrom did make one concession around advertising:

“Let’s say a business wanted to promote their account to gain more followers and Instagram was able to feature them in some way. In order to help make a more relevant and useful promotion, it would be helpful to see which of the people you follow also follow this business. In this way, some of the data you produce — like the actions you take (eg, following the account) and your profile photo — might show up if you are following this business.”

This push for advertising and revenue generation is the biggest change to the terms of service since Instagram’s acquisition by Facebook for a cool $735million earlier this year.

Facebook itself is criticised to no end for every little alteration they decide to make to their appearance, or their terms of service. It’s users become very vocal during times of change (we all witnessed the apparent outrage to the forceable changing to timeline!), but few ever seem to abandon the network – where would they go?

This is what Instagram need to hope for. The company currently has in the region of 100 million users, whom have uploaded some 5 billion photos. Are these users committed enough to stay put however, or is there scope to move elsewhere? German company EyeEm could provide a more appealing photo host, or perhaps good ol’ Flickr who just released a killer new smartphone app? Only time will tell, let’s just hope Zuckerberg has a plan B if he just squandered $735 million!

TWTW Tech: New nano-SIM Specs Decided

new nano-SIM specs

credit: aspleysatellite.co.uk

The European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) has reached a decision regarding the standard size and insertion mechanism for nano-SIM cards.

The tiny new SIM cards will be 40% smaller than the current micro-SIM, measuring 12.3mm by 8.8mm by 0.67mm. The loading mechanism will be tray based, familiar to those who have used an iPhone or Nokia’s current flagship model – the Lumia 900.

Now that the standard has been agreed, it shall not be long until we see nano-SIMs appearing in smartphones and other mobile devices. The new smaller size will free up precious real-estate inside the phone, allowing for slimmer and smaller devices in the future.

TWTW Tech: Lovefilm Instant introduces HD Streaming

Lovefilm instantLovefilm Instant, the company’s movies and TV streaming service, has finally made the leap to High Definition.

HD streaming will be available on PC and Mac in full 1080p. Samsung and LG Blu-ray players and smart TVs, along with the Xbox 360 will also get the HD goods, although only in 720p. For the moment PlayStation 3 users will not be able to stream HD content, although Lovefilm say they are working hard to change this.

Key titles available in HD include Apocalypse Now, Gnomeo & Juliet, Planet Earth and Lost – with more to be added at a later date.

Lovefilm has always had an impressive catalogue of movies and shows, but stream quality often lagged behind it’s competitors.

Netflix, Lovefilm Instant’s closest competitor, has offered HD streaming since it debuted in the UK in January, luring away many of Lovefilm’s customers. Netflix’s catalogue is not as strong as Lovefilm however, so with the introduction of HD video to Lovefilm Instant, the Amazon owned company may yet prove it’s dominance in the market.

TWTW Tech: Google wants to .lol

Google wants to .lol

Google has revealed that it has applied for some interesting top level domains (TLDs), as the three month long application window to The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) closed last week.

Speaking on the official Google blog, the company’s Chief Internet Evangelist, Vint Cerf told of how Google’s applications fall into 4 categories:

  • Google trademarks, like .google
  • Domains that relate to their core business, such as .docs
  • Domains that will improve user experience, such as .youtube, so YouTube channels and genres can be identified more easily
  • Domains that Google believes have interesting creative potential, like .lol

With the majority of webpages falling under the .com TLD, Google hope that by introducing more choice to domain names, we shall see “more diverse – and perhaps shorter – signposts in cyberspace”

TWTW Tech: Apple Ditching Google Maps for iOS6

Apple Maps iOS6

Apple will be cutting ties with Google Maps, in favour of using a completely in-house developed mapping system for iOS6, reports 9to5Mac.

According to “trusted sources”, the new mapping application will be similar in look and feel to the current application, but with “a much cleaner, faster, and more reliable experience”.

Before I started Social Gadget, I remember hearing news of Apple acquiring C3 Technologies; a 3D map rendering company with mind-blowing demonstration videos. It seems Apple have been putting the C3 team to work, as the application is said to offer full 3D rendering at the touch of a button.

Prior to buying C3 Technologies, Apple purchased two other mapping companies: Placebase and Poly9. These acquisitions date as far back as October 2009, making it clear that a entirely Apple owned mapping application has been on the company’s agenda for a while.

Let’s hope they see fit to improve on the turn by turn navigation service while they’re at it!

TWTW Tech: Capped Data Prices When Roaming in Europe

capped data fees cheaper roaming

Using your phone abroad is about to get a lot cheaper, thanks to new regulations put in place by the European Parliament.

As of July 1st 2012, making a phone call from Europe will cost no more than €0.29 (23p*) per minute. Receiving a call will be not exceed 8 cents (6p) per minute, and text message charges will be no greater than 9 cents (7p). Data charges will be capped 70 cents (56p) per Mb. VAT will be added to these costs.

* All prices in GBP are based on today’s (16/5/12) exchange rate.

This is great news for travellers who have fallen victim to “shock bills” as a result of regular mobile use abroad. What’s more, the rates are only going to get cheaper, with prices set to drop each July for the next two years. By July 2014, downloads will cost a maximum of 20 cents (16p) per Mb.

Wired UK put the new capped data prices into context well – downloading a song of average size (5Mb) from iTunes would cost a maximum of £2.95 in 2012, but only 80p in 2014.

By 2014, customers will also be able to shop around for a cheaper roaming provider, while keeping their own number. This is sure to induce competition between providers, making it highly likely that cost will drop well below the maximums stated.

TWTW Tech: O2 UK Rolling Out Faster 3G

O2 UK is currently in the process of rolling out the fastest variant of 3G available (DC-HSPA) with a theoretical top download speed of 42Mbps.

DC-HSPA stands for dual-cell high speed packet access, and could potentially allow for double the download speed of the more widespread HSPA+ variant of 3G. O2 are beginning to roll out the faster version in major cities across the UK now.

While this is perhaps not the hike into 4G/LTE speeds we so desperately lack in the UK, any push to advance current services is certainly welcome. 4G has been delayed across Britain due to a “large number of technical and competition issues” an Ofcom spokesman told the Guardian. One of the bigger technical issues revolves around much of the UK’s dependance upon Digital Freeview television; it’s place in the radio spectrum currently occupies the space 4G would require.

TWTW Tech: Blackberry 10 Sneak Preview

BlackBerry 10RIM, the makers of BlackBerry have had a tough time of late. Everyone and their dog has had a go at putting down the company for falling behind in the smartphone business. Yesterday, those who still believe (or at least those who are just curious) have gathered in Orlando, Florida for BlackBerry World 2012.

Making a brave decision not to showcase any new hardware, RIM have instead turned the attention to their latest operating system – BlackBerry 10. The new OS appears to be developed solely for touch interface, suggesting that finally RIM have caught onto the fact that a physical keyboard is not needed anymore. To assure business types that losing actual keys will not be a problem for efficiency, BlackBerry 10 appears to have a fresh take on predictive text with word suggestions floating above key you just typed.

Get a feel for how typing on BlackBerry 10 will feel from the video below.

TWTW Tech: Spotify for iPad Launches

Spotify for iPad

After what seems like a life time of pleading, begging, wishing, demanding and maybe even some threatening – Spotify have released its iPad app.

The iPad offering has all the features one would expect. You can search and play music from Spotify’s vast library, along with creating playlists which can sync to your device for those dark times you’re offline. The UI has undergone a complete overhaul from it’s iPhone brother. Gorgeous Retina visuals show off a ‘cover flow‘ like home screen, displaying recommendations and new releases. “Now Playing” can be viewed in a stunning full-screen view with HD artwork keeping things looking crisp. Viewing friends playlist and sharing tracks look gorgeous too.

The AirPlay feature found in the iPhone build is there too. If you have a fairly Apple orientated house this feature, paired with Spotify’s gorgeous visuals, make the iPad app the definitive way to experience Spotify in the home.

Check out the video for a peek at the new design.
