Instagram Suffering From Privacy Policy Woes

Instagram has found itself in a spot of bother over the last few days. Recent changes to it’s privacy policy suggesting that the retro photos network may sell its users photos, has prompted drastic action from individual users and brands alike.

Realising the extent to which this new policy was unfavourable with it’s users, Kevin Systrom Instagram’s CEO, posted to the company’s blog to set the record straight.

“To be clear, it is not our intention to sell your photos” he said.

He also mentions that the company is not intending to use pictures of its members in advertising and the language used in that part of the policy will be removed to avoid confusion.

Systrom did make one concession around advertising:

“Let’s say a business wanted to promote their account to gain more followers and Instagram was able to feature them in some way. In order to help make a more relevant and useful promotion, it would be helpful to see which of the people you follow also follow this business. In this way, some of the data you produce — like the actions you take (eg, following the account) and your profile photo — might show up if you are following this business.”

This push for advertising and revenue generation is the biggest change to the terms of service since Instagram’s acquisition by Facebook for a cool $735million earlier this year.

Facebook itself is criticised to no end for every little alteration they decide to make to their appearance, or their terms of service. It’s users become very vocal during times of change (we all witnessed the apparent outrage to the forceable changing to timeline!), but few ever seem to abandon the network – where would they go?

This is what Instagram need to hope for. The company currently has in the region of 100 million users, whom have uploaded some 5 billion photos. Are these users committed enough to stay put however, or is there scope to move elsewhere? German company EyeEm could provide a more appealing photo host, or perhaps good ol’ Flickr who just released a killer new smartphone app? Only time will tell, let’s just hope Zuckerberg has a plan B if he just squandered $735 million!

TWTW Social: Viddy – The Instagram of Video?

Viddy - The Instagram of VideoEver since Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram last month, there has been much talk regarding the race to become the “Instagram of Video”

There are a handful of contenders in this space, such as Mobli; the company, backed by the likes of Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio, currently has 3 million users. SocialCam has a whopping 36 million users (a greater number than Insatgram had prior to the Facebook deal), and former photo-sharing, now turned video startup – Color, has 1 million users.

The fastest growing of these company’s however, is Viddy. Currently boasting 26 million users and reportedly adding a further million every day, the LA based startup gained a lot of attention when Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg joined, posting a video of his dog, Beast. At this rate of growth, Viddy look likely to become the most popular service in a matter of days. Boasting a similar set of filters to those found in Instagram, in addition to other effects, if there is to be a true “Instagram of Video”, Viddy certainly seems the strongest contender.

What are you thoughts regarding the “Instagram of Video”? Will it ever truly exist or is the market just not the same compared to photos? Let us know in the comments, or share the conversation via the social buttons!

TWTW Social: Google+ Hangouts On Air rolling out to all users.

Hangouts On AirLooking for that pull to get into using Google+? The answer may have just come your way with the public release of Google’s live-broadcast version of it’s Hangouts service – Hangouts On Air.

First released last year to a select number of users, Google is now offering the feature to the masses. Hangouts On Air allows users to broadcast their Hangouts live; these can be viewed on the users Google+ page, YouTube channel or on their website.

There are some additional perks to the service; those broadcasting the Hangout, can see the number of viewers in real time, and once the broadcast has finished, Google will upload the public recording to the users YouTube channel, allowing for sharing and re-watching.

Check out the video to see how the service works

Although no official word has been said yet, it is possible that we could see this service go mobile. The Android version of the Google+ app allows users to start a Hangout (this feature isn’t current available on iOS) which could eventually update to include Hangout On Air support. While live streaming through your phone isn’t a new thing, having it linked straight to your social network could prove a powerful tool, should Google see fit to peruse this route.

Let us know your thoughts on Hangouts On Air, is the service likely to get you back onto your Google+ page? Or is there just no deterring you from your timeline? Hit us up in the comment below.

TWTW Social: Twitter Roll Out Updated Version Mobile Site

Twitter updated mobile siteTwitter is attempting to provide a uniform experience of it’s service, regardless of device limitations and quality of signal, by updating it’s mobile version of the site.

Designed for users who access Twitter from feature phones via web (appose to those who use native apps on their smartphone) the update to the site, that first appeared last December, uses 33% less bandwidth than the previous iteration. In a blog post published yesterday (May 7th), Satya Patel, Vice President of Product said: “We’re rolling out this new mobile web experience starting today, and will continue to make Twitter the most accessible way to connect with the world, even with the weakest signals and the simplest devices.”

TWTW Social: Twitter Offer Forced Facebook to Pay $1bn for Instagram

Facebook and Twitter bid for Instagram

When Facebook announced they were purchasing Instagram for a staggering $1bn, the internet was left flabbergasted.

The huge price tag was apparently the result Facebook’s paranoia that Instagram would become a Twitter owned property, reports Venture Beat.

The article tells of how Twitter made “a very real offer in the hundreds of millions of dollars range”. Insatgram apparently did not sign the term sheet, thereby not tying them to a no-shop clause. This allowed Kevin Systrom (Instagrams co-founder) to approach Facebook in search of a better deal. It is reported Zuckerberg “bid just to block the Twitter deal”.

With Facebook looking to keep a hold of the photo sharing market that made the social network so successful, the acquisition of the wildly popular, hipster-photo app was certainly a smart one. Whether the valuation was the reaction to Twitter’s offer or based solely on startups own merits may never be known. In either case, things are looking pretty sweet for Instagram right now.

The Winklevoss twins – best known for their long, fraught legal battle over Facebook’s inception – are to enter the world of venture capitalism.

Appearing on CNBC’s Squark Box on Friday, the “Winklevi” announced that they have a started the investment company with the look to “focus on early-stage, disruptive startups”.

Squark Box anchor, Andre Ross Sorkin touches on the question on everybody’s lips – ‘Is the money behind the company coming from the twins equity stake in Facebook?’ With Facebook’s upcoming IPO, Cameron and Tyler Winkelvoss could stand to make a pretty penny from their combined 1.2million shares in the company.

TWTW Social: LinkedIn launch iPad App

Image representing LinkedIn as depicted in Cru...

Last Wednesday (April 25) saw LinkedIn finally release an iPad application. Building upon the existing iPhone version, the app boasts some neat new features.

Key among these features is the incorporation of your calendar data with information about the people you’re meeting with. The information is gathered from both LinkedIn and Twitter, although Facebook has been omitted. The thinking behind this latest addition is to make using the app part of your regular morning read, preparing you for upcoming meetings by seeing what is happening in the world of those you’re due to meet with. It is a clever idea and one that will make LinkedIn’s users frequent the site much more regularly.

The presentation is also beautiful. Information is clearly and vividly presented, showing not only your calendar, but the most discussed topics/articles and recent job changes by those in your network. These last two features are carried over from the pre-existing iPhone build of the app, although certainly look a lot better with more real estate on the screen.

Facebook Purchases Instagram!

Fresh after releasing Instagram for Android, today saw the news that Facebook have signed the deal to acquire the photo sharing startup for a cool 1bn dollars. It’s not a turn of events that us here at Social Gadget predicted, but it’s fair to say that the acquisition certainly makes sense.

Photo sharing is perhaps the most important aspect of Facebook’s success and with today’s news, it would seem that the company is betting on it remaining as important in the future.

In a post by Zuckerberg today, Facebook’s CEO told of how after the acquisition his team  ”need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook”. This was echoed in a blog post by Kevin Systrom CEO of Instagram, who reassured users that “the Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love”.

Both postings agree upon the fact that Instagram shall be able to post to the other social networks it currently does, even after  it is owned by Facebook, and friend and follower list can remain separate if so wished by the user.

The acquisition is a huge undertaking by the social media giant, one of a scale that Zuckerberg doesn’t feel will happen again anytime soon.

“We don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all”

With Facebook only a couple a weeks away from what may be the largest internet IPO of all time, let’s hope the move pays off for team Zucks.

Instagram Lands On Android

Android owners across the world rejoice!  You too can now be as hip as those flashy iPhone users by filtering your pictures to look like there has been no progression in photography for the past 40 years!

Instagram for Android is now fully available assuming you are running one of the more modern handsets (ver2.2+) with the vast majority of features found in the current iOS build. It has of course been a long time coming, Instagram has built up a massive 27 million user base while being iPhone exclusive, and although inevitably some fanboys will snark at the fact the little green robot and his crew are now in on the act, the release of an Android version is sure to build upon this user base exponentially.

Excited about Instagram for Android or peeved it’s lost iPhone exclusivity? Let us know in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook

App Focus #3: Thumb

In this weeks App Focus, we are delving into Thumb, a real-time opinion poll.

Formally known as “Opinionaided”, Thumb is a social network driven by the purpose of helping other users out. Originally developed as an opinion based shopping aid, Thumb has grown to encompass questions of all categories with a strong community of supporters now connecting with each of other to deliver sound advice.

Questions are based on a ‘thumb up – thumb down’ method, however there is also a box in which the user may write a response to the question. Good advice may be rewarded by the poser of the question, who can mark your responses with Gold Stars if he/she feels you contributed to the question well. Gold Stars act as a validation of the user ultimately – when a user has earned sufficient stars in a particular category, they are credited as a ‘Top Advisor’. It’s a neat system and I found myself finding getting hooked on answering questions.

Hunting for Gold Stars

Perhaps what is most impressive about Thumb is the speed of the responses when a question is posed. To give an accurate and slightly mind blowing idea of the speed to which a question is answered: immediately before starting this paragraph I posed the question “Excited for Star Wars 3D or should they just leave it alone?”. At the time of writing this sentence there have been 84 votes and 16 comments…

Responses are quick... really quick

Users can link with other users who responded to their questions, this can turn into full on discussions or a simple ‘thanks’. If someone routinely seems to be helping you out, you may request them as a friend. By having friends on the network you can target your questions specifically to them, this again adds a level of recognition to the quality of their advice.

Thumb is a great service that can provide hours of entertainment as well as some legitimately useful advice. I did encounter a few annoying questions, especially in the technology category with people just badmouthing one company whilst praising another, but these questions can be breezed past quickly and do not particularly take away from the experience.

Thumb is available now on the App Store and the Android Market.
