TWTW Social: Twitter Offer Forced Facebook to Pay $1bn for Instagram

Facebook and Twitter bid for Instagram

When Facebook announced they were purchasing Instagram for a staggering $1bn, the internet was left flabbergasted.

The huge price tag was apparently the result Facebook’s paranoia that Instagram would become a Twitter owned property, reports Venture Beat.

The article tells of how Twitter made “a very real offer in the hundreds of millions of dollars range”. Insatgram apparently did not sign the term sheet, thereby not tying them to a no-shop clause. This allowed Kevin Systrom (Instagrams co-founder) to approach Facebook in search of a better deal. It is reported Zuckerberg “bid just to block the Twitter deal”.

With Facebook looking to keep a hold of the photo sharing market that made the social network so successful, the acquisition of the wildly popular, hipster-photo app was certainly a smart one. Whether the valuation was the reaction to Twitter’s offer or based solely on startups own merits may never be known. In either case, things are looking pretty sweet for Instagram right now.

The Winklevoss twins – best known for their long, fraught legal battle over Facebook’s inception – are to enter the world of venture capitalism.

Appearing on CNBC’s Squark Box on Friday, the “Winklevi” announced that they have a started the investment company with the look to “focus on early-stage, disruptive startups”.

Squark Box anchor, Andre Ross Sorkin touches on the question on everybody’s lips – ‘Is the money behind the company coming from the twins equity stake in Facebook?’ With Facebook’s upcoming IPO, Cameron and Tyler Winkelvoss could stand to make a pretty penny from their combined 1.2million shares in the company.

TWTW Social: LinkedIn launch iPad App

Image representing LinkedIn as depicted in Cru...

Last Wednesday (April 25) saw LinkedIn finally release an iPad application. Building upon the existing iPhone version, the app boasts some neat new features.

Key among these features is the incorporation of your calendar data with information about the people you’re meeting with. The information is gathered from both LinkedIn and Twitter, although Facebook has been omitted. The thinking behind this latest addition is to make using the app part of your regular morning read, preparing you for upcoming meetings by seeing what is happening in the world of those you’re due to meet with. It is a clever idea and one that will make LinkedIn’s users frequent the site much more regularly.

The presentation is also beautiful. Information is clearly and vividly presented, showing not only your calendar, but the most discussed topics/articles and recent job changes by those in your network. These last two features are carried over from the pre-existing iPhone build of the app, although certainly look a lot better with more real estate on the screen.

TWTW Gaming: New DLC – Batman: Arkham City & Skyrim

Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC

image: gamerant.com

The final chapter of the simply epic Batman: Arkham City was revealed this week as “Harley Quinn’s Revenge”. Adding 2 more hours to the already heavily bulked out story, the last chapter sees players take on the roles of Batman and Robin one last time, to uncover Harley’s plan and shut the gates to Arkham City for good.

The release of the DLC also coincides with the release of the Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition in the US on May 29th. The latest version of the game comes complete with the original story as well as all 4 DLC packs and skins for the characters. Sadly release of this edition of the game in Europe shall be some time in September, although the “Harley Quinn’s Revenge”  DLC should still be available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at the end of May. Release dates for the PC version are still to be confirmed.

Check out the official trailer below.

The long awaited DLC for Bethesda’s highly praised Skyrim seems to be tantalisingly close. The company’s own Pete Hines tweeted yesterday (April 26th)

The Elder Scrolls developer has been tight lipped about what the new content will be, although it’s fair to guess at more quests, locations and general awesomeness. Let’s see if the silence breaks next week.

TWTW Gaming: Hacked Games Removed From PSN

Sony is taking action in an attempt to counteract video game piracy on it’s latest handheld, the PlayStation Vita.

Having had to pull 2 games last month (MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, Everybody’s Tennis), this week saw the Japanese company having to withdraw puzzle title, Super Collapse III from it’s online store. The issue is a result of Wololo’s Half-Byte Loader, a ‘homebrew‘ loader for the PSP that allows the games to be played on Vita via it’s built in PSP emulator. Wololo claim the loader is non-malicious, although given the hacking fiasco Sony faced last year, one can understand the company’s diligence.

Both MotorStorm and Everybody’s Tennis returned to the store after being patched so it’s safe to assume Super Collapse III won’t be gone for long.

TWTW Gaming: Sonic is Back!

Sonic the Hedgehog 4

We have a bit of a soft spot for Sonic here at Social Gadget  (soft enough to nearly forgive the horrendous games the series spawned in recent years). When Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was released for PSN and Xbox Live Arcade in October 2010, faith in our furry blue friend was fully restored… and now he’s back again!

This week saw Sony announce an official release date and pricing for Episode II for PlayStation Network.

May 16th is when the game lands in the European store, priced at £9.99/€12.99. Those who already have purchased Episode I will be treated to exclusive access of a new episode starring Metal Sonic upon purchase of Episode 2. Xbox 360 owner can enjoy the retro fun too with the title being release on XBLA, the same day for 1200MSP.

Do you love Sonic as much as we do? What were your highlights or lowlights of the series? Let us know in the comments below.

TWTW Tech: Google launches Google Drive

Google Drive Logo

After an accidental unveiling earlier in the week during a developer hangout, Google have now officially launched their cloud based storage service - Google Drive.

Packing 5 Gb of storage for the free service (the same as Apple’s iCloud offering), there is scope to up the amount of storage to a whopping 16Tb, although pricing plans have only been disclosed as far as 1Tb.

With numerous other cloud services already existing, Dropbox, iCloud, Box to name a few, is there any pull to use Google’s latest offering? The answer really depends upon whether you’re an avid Google user already. Those familiar with Google Docs will feel right at home with Drive as it operates in much the same way. Real time group collaboration on documents is a neat feature and tie in’s with Google+ (photos and videos already on your Drive account can be shared instantly) will heighten it’s appeal to many. Those that already use other cloud services however, have little reason to move everything over to Drive at the moment… although another 5Gb of free storage for opening an account does sound quite nice now you mention it!

Will you be using Drive for cloud storage? Let us know in the comments box below.

TWTW Tech: Nokia 808 Pureview Video

The release of a new video for Nokia’s insane 41 megapixel smartphone, the 808 PureView, hints that the once believed concept phone could be a commercial product.

The video, cleverly filmed using the device, shows the jaw-dropping level of quality of images and video the phone can capture. It also highlights on some of the devices sharing capabilities, including its NFC tech that looks more than a little like Bump.

Whether the PureView will ever see a release remains at question especially with the device running on dated Symbian software. Regardless of such, the release of the video suggests Nokia is serious about launching the product in the not too distant future.

Social Gadget News

There will be a few changes in the way things operate here on Social Gadget. Firstly, there is going to be a lot more content (Woop!). Second and more importantly, content is going to be a lot more regular!

See my intentions upon starting the blog were to try to report the latest goings on across the tech, social media and gaming worlds as and when they happened. There is one problem with this, it’s bloody well difficult. Trying to search for a new story and write up about it as the news is breaking is no mean feat, especially when there are many other necessary distraction in life. As a result, I fell behind… a lot. There were a few gems but all in all the idea was flawed.

So here’s introducing the new format. Articles will now be presented as “The Week That Was”. There will be three genres –  ”TWTW Social”, “TWTW Tech” and “TWTW Gaming”. These will drop consecutively on Mon, Wed and Fri around 5pm. Other articles, such as Industry Interviews and App Focus will still  be there too, filling the quiet days from time to time. This should make it a lot easier to know when to check back for content along with checking out the usual social accounts.

I hope you all like the new format and that it’ll make Social Gadget a much better place to wind up.

Cheers

Joe

Facebook Purchases Instagram!

Fresh after releasing Instagram for Android, today saw the news that Facebook have signed the deal to acquire the photo sharing startup for a cool 1bn dollars. It’s not a turn of events that us here at Social Gadget predicted, but it’s fair to say that the acquisition certainly makes sense.

Photo sharing is perhaps the most important aspect of Facebook’s success and with today’s news, it would seem that the company is betting on it remaining as important in the future.

In a post by Zuckerberg today, Facebook’s CEO told of how after the acquisition his team  ”need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook”. This was echoed in a blog post by Kevin Systrom CEO of Instagram, who reassured users that “the Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love”.

Both postings agree upon the fact that Instagram shall be able to post to the other social networks it currently does, even after  it is owned by Facebook, and friend and follower list can remain separate if so wished by the user.

The acquisition is a huge undertaking by the social media giant, one of a scale that Zuckerberg doesn’t feel will happen again anytime soon.

“We don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all”

With Facebook only a couple a weeks away from what may be the largest internet IPO of all time, let’s hope the move pays off for team Zucks.
